Grant Village Campground
The Quick Take
Grant Village is Yellowstone's base camp for people who want convenience without apology. Sitting at the south end of Yellowstone Lake, it's one of the park's largest campgrounds — and it feels like it. You're not getting backcountry solitude here; you're getting a camp store, a restaurant within walking distance, a gas station, and a boat ramp for lake access. The trade-off is real: no flush toilets or showers despite the village setting, which surprises a lot of first-timers paying nearly forty bucks a night. What you do get is a killer staging point for West Thumb Geyser Basin, day trips to the Tetons, and morning walks along the lakeshore before the crowds descend. Choose Grant Village if you want a full-service home base and don't mind sacrificing atmosphere for logistics.

Pro Tips
Book the moment reservations open — Grant Village fills fast because it's the closest major campground to Grand Teton and the South Entrance, making it a magnet for road-trippers doing both parks in one trip. Midweek arrivals in late August give you the best odds for last-minute availability.
West Thumb Geyser Basin is a ten-minute drive and most people blow through it in under an hour. Go at sunrise before the bus tours arrive — you'll have lakeside hot springs almost to yourself, and the light on the water is worth dragging yourself out of the sleeping bag.
No showers on-site is the campground's biggest blind spot, but Grant Village Lodge has a public laundry facility nearby. Pack biodegradable wipes for quick cleanups and budget time for the drive to Canyon Village or Old Faithful if you need a proper shower after a few days.
