What to Expect

From the Fairy Falls parking lot, you'll follow a flat, wide former road bed before the trail splits off and begins a gentle climb through lodgepole pine forest. Gentle is the operative word here — the elevation gain is roughly equivalent to walking up a ten-story building, spread over enough distance that most people barely notice. The trees thin out as you ascend a hillside, and then the boardwalk-style overlook platform appears, and suddenly you're staring down at the largest hot spring in North America — a massive, alien eye of deep blue ringed with bands of orange, yellow, and green that look Photoshopped but are actually thermophilic bacteria doing their thing. Unlike the boardwalk at Midway Geyser Basin where you're at eye level with the steam, this vantage point lets you actually see the full color spectrum. Every single person with working legs visiting Yellowstone should do this trail.

Safety Advisory

Bison frequently use the flat trail section between the parking lot and the overlook junction. Give them at least 25 yards of space and never, under any circumstances, approach for a photo — they are faster than you and will prove it.

The overlook platform can get dangerously crowded in peak summer, with visitors jostling near the edge. Keep a grip on small children and watch your footing, especially if the boardwalk is wet from morning dew or rain.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

The Fairy Falls parking lot fills up by 9:30 AM in summer and there is no overflow — if it's full, you're driving in circles. Arrive before 9 AM or after 4 PM, or bike the 1-mile approach from the old trailhead to skip the parking nightmare entirely.

Trail Tip

Midday sun directly overhead gives you the most vivid prismatic colors with the least steam obstruction. Counterintuitive for photographers, but overcast mornings produce so much steam you'll see a white blob instead of the rainbow palette you came for.

Trail Tip

Combine this with the Fairy Falls Trail — the junction is right at the base of the overlook climb. Fairy Falls adds about 1.5 miles each way and gives you a 200-foot waterfall that most overlook-only hikers skip, turning a quick out-and-back into a proper morning.
