What to Expect

Don't let the modest distance fool you — this is really a half-day adventure that uses the Howard Eaton Trail as a backdoor route to Lone Star Geyser, one of Yellowstone's most rewarding thermal features that most visitors never bother to reach. You'll start near Old Faithful and immediately climb through a ghostly landscape of fire-scarred lodgepole pines, where silvered trunks stand like skeletal sentinels and wildflowers have reclaimed the understory. The trail levels out into dense spruce-fir forest — cool, quiet, and a world away from the boardwalk chaos behind you. The descent to Lone Star Geyser feels earned, and if your timing is right, you'll watch this cone geyser erupt in near-solitude, shooting water thirty feet into the air on a roughly three-hour cycle. This one rewards patient hikers who want their geyser experience without the crowd.

Safety Advisory

This trail cuts through prime grizzly bear habitat, especially in the forested middle section. Carry bear spray accessible on your hip, not buried in your pack, and make noise consistently through the trees.

Stay on the maintained trail near Lone Star Geyser — the ground around thermal features can be a thin crust over scalding water, and breaking through is no joke. The park means it when they say stay on trail.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Lone Star Geyser erupts roughly every three hours — check the prediction log at the Old Faithful Visitor Center before you head out so you can time your arrival to catch an eruption rather than sitting and waiting.

Trail Tip

The trailhead directions are confusing: park at the Old Faithful Ranger Station, cross Grand Loop Road on the paved path, then take two consecutive left turns. Miss either left and you'll end up on the wrong trail entirely.

Trail Tip

Bring a sit pad or packable chair — once you reach Lone Star Geyser, the wait for an eruption is part of the experience, and the ground is rocky and damp. A thermos of coffee and some patience turn this into the best show in the park.
