Lava Creek Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
Bear country rules apply year-round — carry bear spray accessible on your hip, not buried in your pack, and make noise through the forested sections where sightlines are limited.
The creek banks can be slick and undercut, especially during spring runoff in May and June — stay on established trail and resist the urge to scramble down to the water's edge near the falls.

Pro Tips
This works best as a one-way shuttle hike — drop a car at the Undine Falls pullout on the Grand Loop Road and start from the Lava Creek trailhead near Mammoth, so you're walking downstream with gravity on your side.
Hit the trail before 9 AM in summer to have Undine Falls almost to yourself — by midmorning, day-hikers start trickling in from the road pullout and the solitude evaporates.
Bring a wider lens for Undine Falls — the cascade is broader than it is tall, and shooting from the trail-level vantage gives you a completely different perspective than the standard roadside overlook that everyone photographs.
