What to Expect

You start by crossing the Biscuit Basin boardwalk — already a worthy detour with its churning hot springs — before the real trail ducks into a shaded corridor of lodgepole pine and Douglas fir. The path follows the Little Firehole River upstream, gaining elevation steadily but never brutally, with the sound of rushing water keeping you company the whole way. The forest here is a patchwork of fire recovery and old growth, so expect stretches of open sky between dense canopy. The payoff is Mystic Falls itself: a seventy-foot cascade pouring off the edge of the Madison Plateau into a rocky amphitheater that feels far more remote than its distance from the road suggests. If you take the loop option over the top, you get a sweeping view of the Upper Geyser Basin that most visitors never see. This one rewards hikers who want a real destination without committing to an all-day death march.

Safety Advisory

The Biscuit Basin area is active hydrothermal ground. Stay on boardwalks and maintained trail at all times — the crust beside thermal features can be paper-thin, with scalding water inches below the surface.

Bear activity is common along this creek corridor. Carry bear spray accessible on your belt, not buried in your pack, and make noise on blind corners through the forest sections.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Take the clockwise loop option — climb to the overlook first while your legs are fresh, then descend past the falls on the way back. The Upper Geyser Basin vista from the ridgeline is one of Yellowstone's most underrated viewpoints.

Trail Tip

Arrive before 9 AM to snag parking at Biscuit Basin. By mid-morning in summer, the lot overflows and you'll be circling like a vulture. The alternative pullouts 0.25 miles south work in a pinch but add road-walking.

Trail Tip

The base of Mystic Falls has a rocky shelf perfect for a snack break and long-exposure photography. Bring a mini tripod — the mist from the falls creates silky water shots even in midday light.
