What to Expect

Two interconnected boardwalk loops wind through what might be the most volatile patch of ground in North America. Porcelain Basin hits you first — a vast, treeless expanse of milky blue pools and hissing steam vents that looks like another planet entirely. The ground itself is pale and cracked, radiating heat you can feel through your shoes. Cross over to Back Basin for a more forested, intimate loop where Steamboat Geyser — the world's tallest active geyser — sits waiting to either disappoint you or blow your mind. The boardwalks are flat and well-maintained, making this one of the rare Yellowstone thermal areas that's genuinely accessible to almost everyone. The whole circuit takes about ninety minutes at a comfortable pace, though you'll stop constantly because every bend reveals something steaming, bubbling, or smelling faintly of sulfur. Perfect for anyone who wants Yellowstone's geothermal drama without breaking a sweat.

Safety Advisory

The ground off the boardwalk is a thin crust over scalding water — stepping off the path is not a 'minor rule,' it's genuinely life-threatening. Multiple visitors have died from thermal burns at Norris. Stay on the boardwalk, full stop.

Steam vents can shift direction without warning. If a gust of sulfurous steam blows across the boardwalk, cover your nose and mouth and move through quickly — prolonged exposure to hydrogen sulfide gas can cause dizziness and nausea.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Arrive before 9 AM or after 4 PM — the parking lot at Norris fills brutally fast in summer, and there's no overflow option that doesn't involve a long walk along the road.

Trail Tip

Do Porcelain Basin first. The open terrain catches morning light beautifully and the steam is more dramatic in cooler air. By midday, harsh sun washes out the vivid blues and greens in the pools.

Trail Tip

Check the ranger board at the trailhead museum for recent Steamboat Geyser activity — if it erupted within the past few days, the runoff channels will still be flowing and the whole Back Basin has a different energy.
