What to Expect

This is the cheat code for one of Yellowstone's best views. Starting from the Old Faithful boardwalk, you cross the Firehole River and immediately hit a series of switchbacks that climb through lodgepole pine forest. The trail is short but steep enough to get your heart rate up — think of it as a quick stairmaster session with a world-class reward. At the top, the Upper Geyser Basin spreads out below you like a steaming, otherworldly map. You can watch Old Faithful erupt from above while most visitors are crammed shoulder-to-shoulder at the benches below. On the return, a spur trail passes Solitary Geyser, which pulses every few minutes in a satisfying little show. This is the perfect trail for anyone who wants a big payoff without committing to a full day on the trail.

Safety Advisory

The switchbacks can be icy and treacherous in early spring and late fall — traction devices are worth throwing in your pack if you're visiting outside peak summer.

Stay on the established trail near Solitary Geyser. Thermal ground in this basin is thin and unpredictable, and the water beneath it is hot enough to cause severe burns.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Time your hike to arrive at the overlook about 10 minutes before Old Faithful's next predicted eruption — check the visitor center board before you start, and you'll have the best seat in the park.

Trail Tip

Take the Solitary Geyser spur on your way back down rather than on the way up. It adds minimal distance and you'll appreciate the flat detour after the descent more than during the climb.

Trail Tip

Go before 9 AM or after 5 PM to have the overlook nearly to yourself. Midday crowds from the boardwalk do find their way up here, but early birds and evening hikers rarely share the view.
