Specimen Ridge Day Hike Trail

What to Expect

This one starts with a fake-out — a mellow stroll along an old service road that lasts about a hundred yards before the trail veers right and the real work begins. From there, you're climbing steadily up open grassland toward a high ridge, with the kind of grade that has you stopping to 'admire the view' more than you'd like to admit. The trail itself is informal and braided, with game trails crisscrossing the hillside trying to lure you off-route. Push through to the ridgeline and you're rewarded with a panorama that earns every drop of sweat: the broad sweep of Slough Creek Valley below, the jagged Absaroka Range stacking up to the east, and a sense of space that the boardwalk crowds at Old Faithful will never know. The cliff outcrop at the far end of the ridge makes a natural turnaround and a killer lunch spot. This trail is built for hikers who want to earn their solitude and don't mind a little route-finding along the way.

Safety Advisory

This is serious grizzly country with no tree cover on the upper ridge — carry bear spray accessible on your hip, make noise on the climb, and do not hike solo if you can avoid it.

The route is unmarked and follows social trails that disappear in spots, especially where game trails intersect — if you lose the path in the forested section below the cliff outcrop, backtrack to the open ridge rather than bushwhacking forward.

The ridge is fully exposed with zero shade and no water sources — on a clear summer day the sun is relentless at this elevation, so start early and carry more water than you think a four-mile hike requires.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start from the pullout on the Northeast Entrance Road between Tower Junction and Lamar Valley — there's no formal trailhead sign, so mark the GPS coordinates before you go or you'll drive right past it.

Trail Tip

Once you hit the ridge, keep to the highest ground and resist the temptation to follow the well-worn wildlife trails that traverse below the ridgeline — they lead into timber and dead-end, costing you time and patience.

Trail Tip

Bring binoculars, not just for the Absaroka views but because this ridge overlooks prime wolf and bison territory in the Lamar Valley — early morning hikers regularly spot wildlife from above that road-level observers never see.
