What to Expect

This is Yellowstone's most underrated thermal area, and the fact that half the park's visitors blow right past it on their way to Old Faithful is a gift to you. A flat boardwalk loop hugs the western shore of Yellowstone Lake, winding past electric-blue hot springs, bubbling mud pots, and dormant geysers that occasionally gurgle to life right at the waterline. The contrast is surreal — steam rising from scalding pools just feet from the frigid lake. The boardwalk is fully accessible and smooth, making this one of the rare thermal features you can experience in a wheelchair or with a stroller. The whole loop takes under an hour at a leisurely pace, and Abyss Pool alone — a stunning sapphire crater — is worth the stop. Perfect for families, anyone with mobility concerns, or photographers chasing that steam-over-lake shot in morning light.

Safety Advisory

The ground around thermal features is a thin crust over boiling water — stepping off the boardwalk is not just illegal, it is genuinely life-threatening. Multiple people have died in Yellowstone's hot springs. Keep children within arm's reach at all times.

Boardwalk surfaces can be slick when wet from steam or rain. Watch your footing, especially near the lakeshore section where mist collects.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Arrive before 9 AM or after 5 PM — the parking lot is small and fills fast midday, but the basin is nearly empty at the edges of the day when the light is best anyway.

Trail Tip

Walk the loop counterclockwise to hit the lakeshore thermal features first, when the morning steam is thickest and the lake provides a dramatic backdrop before the sun flattens everything out.

Trail Tip

Linger at Abyss Pool and Black Pool — these are the two show-stoppers. Black Pool, despite its name, is an impossible shade of turquoise. Stand at the overlook where steam drifts across the lake surface for the best photo on the entire boardwalk.
