What to Expect

Alder Creek is Yosemite's answer to the question 'what if I want a waterfall all to myself?' The route winds through open pine forest that feels more like the Sierra backcountry than the polished trails near the Valley floor. You'll climb steadily — think two Empire State Buildings stacked on top of each other — through a landscape that alternates between sun-dappled forest and exposed granite sections. The trail is lightly maintained and can be faint in spots, which is exactly why you won't see the crowds that plague Vernal Fall. Your reward is a 100-foot cascade that thunders in late spring and threads delicately down the rock face by midsummer. The shorter 7.4-mile option from Mosquito Creek Trailhead shaves off distance but not the sense of earned solitude. This is a trail for hikers who consider 'no one else was there' the highest compliment a destination can receive.

Safety Advisory

The trail can be faint through meadow sections and unmarked at junctions — download offline maps or carry a paper topo. GPS breadcrumbs are your friend on this one.

Creek crossings can run fast and thigh-deep during peak snowmelt in May and June. Trekking poles and water shoes earn their weight on this trail.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start from the Mosquito Creek Trailhead if you want the waterfall without the full 12-mile commitment — it cuts the route nearly in half and skips the least interesting section of forest road walking.

Trail Tip

Carry at least three liters per person; there's seasonal water at creek crossings, but flow is unreliable by late July. A filter is essential if you plan to resupply from Alder Creek itself.

Trail Tip

The falls photograph best in late morning when direct light hits the cascade face. Arrive by 10 AM and set up on the granite slabs at the base — they make a natural tripod platform and a decent lunch spot.
