Big Trees Loop Trail

What to Expect

This is about as gentle as Yosemite gets — a flat, paved loop through the Mariposa Grove that takes less time than finding a parking spot. The Big Trees Loop winds beneath towering giant sequoias whose cinnamon-red bark and sheer bulk make everything around them feel miniature. You'll pass the Fallen Monarch, a massive downed sequoia so intact that it once served as a shelter for cavalry horses (and yes, they fit inside). Interpretive panels along the way explain the fire ecology that keeps these ancient giants alive. The trail is smooth enough for strollers and wheelchairs, shaded by the canopy overhead, and quiet enough that you can actually hear the forest. Perfect for families with young kids, anyone with mobility concerns, or hikers who just want a reverent walk among the oldest living things on the planet.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Arrive before 9 AM or after 4 PM to avoid the shuttle crowds — the Mariposa Grove parking lot fills early in summer, and once it does, you're riding the shuttle from the welcome center near the South Entrance.

Trail Tip

Pair this loop with the Grizzly Giant trail (another half-mile each way) for a satisfying morning that hits the grove's two most impressive trees without breaking a sweat.

Trail Tip

Stand at the base of any sequoia and look straight up along the trunk — this is the shot that actually conveys the scale. Wide-angle lenses from a distance flatten everything and make the trees look ordinary.
