Dog Lake & Lembert Dome
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The final granite pitch on Lembert Dome is smooth and exposed with no guardrails. Wet rock or loose grit on the surface turns it dangerously slippery — skip the dome if there's any moisture on the rock.
At nearly 8,800 feet, altitude can catch Valley-acclimated hikers off guard. If you drove up Tioga Road that morning, take the ascent slower than you think you need to.

Pro Tips
Start at the Dog Lake/Lembert Dome trailhead on Tioga Road, not the nearby trail from the stables — the stables route adds unnecessary distance and misses the Lembert Dome junction.
Hit Lembert Dome first while your legs are fresh and the granite is dry from morning sun. Save the flat, easy Dog Lake stretch for the cooldown. The dome's south face heats up fast by midday.
Dog Lake is one of the warmer swimmable lakes in the Tuolumne area — pack a lightweight towel and plan for a dip in late July or August when water temps are tolerable.
