What to Expect

This is barely a hike — it's more like the world's most rewarding parking lot walk. From the Glacier Point lot, a paved path leads you a couple hundred yards to a stone-walled overlook perched more than half a mile above the Valley floor. The payoff is wildly disproportionate to the effort: Half Dome fills your entire field of vision at eye level, Yosemite Falls threads down the north wall, and on clear days the Clark Range and high Sierra stretch to the horizon. Vernal and Nevada Falls glint in the distance like silver threads. The overlook area has metal railings and interpretive panels, but step to the edges and the exposure is real — the Valley floor looks like a miniature diorama far below. This is the trail for anyone who wants Yosemite's single most iconic viewpoint without breaking a sweat.

Safety Advisory

The overlook sits at a sheer 3,200-foot drop with limited railing in some sections — keep a firm grip on children and stay well behind any unfenced edges. Multiple fatalities have occurred from falls at Glacier Point.

At 7,200 feet elevation, conditions shift fast — afternoon thunderstorms roll in quickly during summer, and exposed granite becomes dangerously slick when wet.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Arrive before 9 AM or after 5 PM to dodge the tour bus crowds that pack the overlook midday — sunset here is legendary, and the light on Half Dome turns from white to gold to deep orange.

Trail Tip

Glacier Point Road typically opens late May and closes after the first major snowfall in November — check Yosemite's road status page before driving up, because the 32-mile road from Chinquapin junction has no turnaround once you commit.

Trail Tip

For the best photographs, position yourself at the far left (east) end of the overlook where you can frame Half Dome with the Valley floor below and no railing in the shot. A polarizing filter cuts the haze that builds by afternoon.
