Safety Advisory
The Tuolumne River crossings can be dangerous in early season when snowmelt is running high. If water is above your knees at any crossing, turn back — hikers have been swept away here. Check conditions at the Tuolumne Meadows ranger station before heading out.
You're hiking between 8,500 and 7,800 feet the entire time. If you drove up from the valley that morning, altitude sickness can hit hard on the climb back. Spend at least one night at elevation before attempting this trail, and watch for headaches or nausea.

Pro Tips
Start early — by 7 AM if possible. The return climb gains all 800 feet in the final stretch, and afternoon sun on exposed granite turns the hike home into a slow cooker. Morning shade makes the ascent far more bearable.
If you're pushing to Waterwheel Falls, bring a water filter and at least three liters of capacity. The extra eight-mile round trip adds serious time, and the only reliable water is the river itself. A Sawyer Squeeze weighs almost nothing and pays for itself on this trail.
The best photo spot isn't the destination — it's the granite slabs above Tuolumne Falls about three miles in, where you can frame the cascade with the Cathedral Range in the background. Arrive before 10 AM when the light hits the falls without harsh shadows.
