Guardians Loop Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
Snow and ice can linger on the upper loop trail well into May or even June — the grove sits above 5,500 feet and the shaded north-facing sections hold snow long after the valley floor has dried out. Traction devices are smart in early season.
There is no water source along the trail, and the loop is long enough that a single small bottle won't cut it on a warm day — carry at least two liters per person.

Pro Tips
Take the free shuttle from the Mariposa Grove Welcome Plaza — the parking lot at the trailhead fills by 9 AM in summer, and the road closes to private vehicles when it's full.
Hike the loop counterclockwise to get the steeper climbing done early while you're fresh, saving the gentle downhill return through the lower grove for tired legs.
The Telescope Tree is easy to walk past if you're not paying attention — look for the massive hollow trunk on the right side of the trail about 3.5 miles in, and step inside to look straight up through the opening for one of the grove's most surreal photo ops.
