What to Expect

Starting from the Hetch Hetchy entrance station, this short-but-steep out-and-back wastes no time gaining elevation through oak woodland and mixed conifers. The trail climbs steadily over rocky, root-laced terrain — expect a solid calf workout condensed into just one mile each way, with roughly the same vertical as climbing a 60-story building. The canopy offers decent shade for most of the ascent, but the final push to the rocky outcropping opens up to full sun and an absolutely jaw-dropping panorama of Hetch Hetchy Valley and its reservoir below. On clear days, the granite walls framing the valley rival anything in Yosemite Valley proper, minus about 99% of the crowds. This is a perfect trail for hikers who want a real viewpoint without committing to a full day — you can be back at your car in well under two hours.

Safety Advisory

The overlook point is an unguarded rocky outcropping with steep drop-offs — keep children close and watch your footing, especially on loose gravel near the edge.

Rattlesnakes are common in the Hetch Hetchy area, particularly in warmer months — stay on trail and watch where you place your hands and feet on rocky sections.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start early enough to beat the Hetch Hetchy entrance station hours — the road gate typically opens at 8 AM and closes at 5 PM (hours shift seasonally), so plan accordingly or you'll be locked in or locked out.

Trail Tip

The Hetch Hetchy area sits lower and hotter than Yosemite Valley; bring at least a liter of water per person even for this short hike, and wear a sun hat for the exposed final section at the overlook.

Trail Tip

The rocky outcropping at the top is a fantastic photography perch — shoot facing east in morning light to catch the sun illuminating Wapama and Tueeulala Falls across the reservoir, especially in spring when snowmelt has them roaring.
