What to Expect

This is one of Yosemite's best effort-to-reward ratios. From the Snow Flat trailhead off Tioga Road, you'll climb a modest hill through red fir forest before the canopy opens up and you're scrambling across sun-warmed granite slabs. The trail is well-worn but rugged in spots — think exposed rock steps and loose gravel rather than manicured switchbacks. In just over a mile, you'll crest a rise and May Lake appears below you, a deep alpine pool sitting in a granite bowl at the base of Mount Hoffmann. Half Dome, Clouds Rest, and the Cathedral Range line the horizon like a greatest-hits reel of Yosemite high country. The whole thing takes about an hour round trip, which makes it perfect for families with kids who have some trail legs, photographers chasing golden hour, or anyone who just drove Tioga Road and wants to stretch without committing to a full day.

Safety Advisory

Tioga Road typically doesn't open until late May or June and closes with the first heavy snow in October or November. Check road status before driving out — there's no alternate route to this trailhead.

The granite slabs hold snow patches well into July some years. These can obscure the trail and create slip hazards, especially on the steeper sections near the ridgeline.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

The trailhead parking lot at Snow Flat is small and fills by 10 AM on summer weekends. Arrive before 9 or after 4 to avoid circling — there's no overflow lot and the road shoulder is narrow.

Trail Tip

Bring trekking poles or sticky-soled shoes for the granite slab sections, especially on the descent. Morning dew or late-season ice makes the rock slippery in ways that catch people off guard.

Trail Tip

For the best photos, hike in the last two hours before sunset — the western light paints Mount Hoffmann orange and the lake turns glassy once afternoon winds die down. The High Sierra Camp dock (when open) makes a solid foreground element.
