Mist Trail to Vernal Fall
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The granite steps through the mist zone are dangerously slick, especially on the descent. Move slowly, use the handrails, and avoid cotton-soled shoes. Multiple fatalities have occurred from falls on these steps — this is not an exaggeration.
Stay behind all railings at the top of Vernal Fall. The current above the falls is deceptively strong, and the polished granite along the river offers zero grip. People have been swept over the edge wading in water that looked ankle-deep and calm.
In early season when snow lingers, the upper portion of the trail can be icy in morning shade. Microspikes are worth the weight if you're hiking before mid-June.

Pro Tips
Start before 8 AM to snag parking at the Trailhead lot near Happy Isles — by 9:30 it's full and you're adding a mile walk from the nearest shuttle stop. Better yet, take the free Valley shuttle to Stop 16.
In May and June, pack your phone and camera in a zip-lock bag for the mist zone. A rain jacket helps, but your legs will be drenched regardless — wear quick-dry shorts and trail runners rather than heavy boots.
At the top of Vernal Fall, walk past the main overlook to the Emerald Pool area for a quieter lunch spot with views back down the canyon. The flat granite slabs along the river make a perfect picnic deck that most hikers walk right past.
