What to Expect

This is one of the best bang-for-your-buck hikes in all of Yosemite. From the Glacier Point Road trailhead, you'll follow a gentle path through a quiet forest of lodgepole pines before the trees thin out and bare granite takes over. The final push is a moderate scramble up the smooth, rounded surface of the dome itself — nothing technical, but enough to get your hands involved and your heart rate up. At the top, the 360-degree panorama is staggering: Half Dome commands the east, Yosemite Falls drops to the north, El Capitan anchors the west, and the Clark Range stretches south into wilderness. The whole thing clocks in at about an hour, making it absurdly efficient for the quality of views you get. Perfect for anyone who wants a summit experience without committing to a full day on the trail.

Safety Advisory

The granite dome surface is dangerously slick when wet — after rain or snowmelt, the smooth rock becomes an ice rink. If conditions are damp, skip the summit scramble entirely.

There are no guardrails at the top, and the dome drops off steeply on multiple sides. Keep a close eye on children and stay well back from the edges, especially on windy days.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Park at the Sentinel Dome/Taft Point trailhead on Glacier Point Road, about a mile before the Glacier Point parking area — the lot is small and fills by 10 AM on summer weekends, so arrive early or time it for late afternoon.

Trail Tip

Pair this with the Taft Point trail from the same trailhead for a two-for-one outing — Sentinel Dome first for the panorama, then Taft Point for the vertigo-inducing cliff edge. Together they run about 5 miles and make a full morning.

Trail Tip

The bare granite summit is one of the best sunset spots in the park — the dome catches golden light on Half Dome that photographers lose their minds over. Bring a headlamp for the walk back through the forest in the dark.
