What to Expect

Starting from the Lembert Dome trailhead in Tuolumne Meadows, this out-and-back follows the John Muir Trail through one of Yosemite's most serene high-country corridors. The path is flat and forgiving — packed dirt threading through lodgepole pine forest with the kind of dappled light that makes you forget you're at nearly 8,600 feet. Within the first half mile, the trail opens to views of the vast Tuolumne Meadows stretching south. The real draw is the Lyell Fork itself: a glassy, meandering river that looks like it was designed by a landscape painter. At the twin log bridges, you'll find sandy banks perfect for sitting and watching the water slide past granite slabs. This is the rare Yosemite trail where the journey feels unhurried — no quad-burning switchbacks, no crowds jockeying for position. Ideal for families, anyone recovering from a bigger hike the day before, or photographers chasing that golden-hour river light.

Safety Advisory

The Lyell Fork looks gentle but runs fast and cold during peak snowmelt in June and early July — keep children well back from the banks and never attempt to wade across.

At 8,600 feet, visitors coming straight from sea level may feel the altitude; take the flat terrain as a gift and stay hydrated.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Park at the Lembert Dome parking area and walk through the backpackers' parking lot to reach the trailhead — the main lot fills by 10 AM on summer weekends, so arrive early or plan for an evening stroll instead.

Trail Tip

The sandy riverbanks at the bridges make a perfect picnic spot, but pack everything out and bring a sit pad — the ground stays damp well into July from snowmelt.

Trail Tip

For the best photographs, hit the bridges in the last two hours before sunset when the low-angle light turns the Lyell Fork into liquid copper against the dark granite.
