What to Expect

The Valley Loop is Yosemite's grand tour on foot — thirteen miles of mostly flat terrain that traces the entire floor of the Valley, threading between meadows, forests, and the Merced River while every iconic granite wall looms overhead. You'll pass beneath El Capitan's sheer face, cross open meadows with postcard views of Half Dome, and walk through quiet stretches of black oak woodland where most visitors never venture. The paved and packed-dirt surface is forgiving on your joints, but the sheer distance makes this a legitimate day commitment. River crossings on footbridges, sunny meadow stretches, and cool pine corridors keep the scenery rotating. This is the trail for hikers who want to actually experience the Valley rather than just photograph it from a pullout — the kind of day where you earn your beer at the Lodge.

Safety Advisory

Sections through open meadows offer zero shade — on summer afternoons temperatures can push past 100 degrees on the Valley floor, so carry more water than you think you need and wear sun protection.

The trail crosses several bike paths and road intersections — stay alert for cyclists, especially near Yosemite Village and Curry Village where traffic converges.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start at the Valley View trailhead on the north side early morning and hike counter-clockwise — you'll have El Capitan lit by morning sun and finish with Half Dome views in golden afternoon light.

Trail Tip

Break the loop into two days if thirteen miles sounds ambitious: hike the north side one day (Camp 4 to Mirror Lake) and the south side the next, using the free Valley shuttle to reposition.

Trail Tip

The stretch between El Capitan Meadow and Cathedral Beach on the south side is the quietest section — most day-hikers cluster near Yosemite Falls and Mirror Lake, so you'll have near-solitude here even in peak season.
