What to Expect

This out-and-back along the north shore of Hetch Hetchy Reservoir is one of Yosemite's best-kept secrets — a waterfall hike without the Valley crowds. You'll start by crossing O'Shaughnessy Dam, which is an experience in itself, then follow a mostly flat trail blasted into the granite cliffs above the turquoise reservoir. The path threads through a tunnel carved right into the rock, ducks through oak woodlands, and delivers you first to the wispy bridal-veil curtain of Tueeulala Falls before the main event: Wapama Falls, a thundering cascade that crashes directly across the trail in spring. The elevation gain is gentle enough that your legs won't notice, but the granite-slab trail surface keeps things interesting. This one's perfect for hikers who want a legit waterfall payoff without signing up for a death march.

Safety Advisory

During peak snowmelt (typically April through early June), the footbridges at Wapama Falls can be submerged under fast-moving, knee-deep water. People have been swept off — if water is flowing over the bridges, turn around.

The trail crosses exposed granite slabs that become dangerously slick when wet from spray. Watch your footing near both waterfalls, especially if wearing smooth-soled shoes.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

The drive to Hetch Hetchy requires passing through a ranger station that doesn't open until 8 AM (hours vary seasonally) — plan accordingly or you'll be sitting in your car staring at a locked gate.

Trail Tip

In late spring, Wapama Falls sends so much water across the trail that the footbridges at the base become impassable and dangerously slick. Check conditions with the Hetch Hetchy ranger station before committing to the drive out.

Trail Tip

Bring a wide-angle lens and shoot from the footbridges at the base of Wapama — the falls tower directly above you, and midday light actually works here since the canyon funnels sun onto the granite wall behind the cascade.
