Wapama Falls
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
During peak snowmelt (typically April through early June), the footbridges at Wapama Falls can be submerged under fast-moving, knee-deep water. People have been swept off — if water is flowing over the bridges, turn around.
The trail crosses exposed granite slabs that become dangerously slick when wet from spray. Watch your footing near both waterfalls, especially if wearing smooth-soled shoes.

Pro Tips
The drive to Hetch Hetchy requires passing through a ranger station that doesn't open until 8 AM (hours vary seasonally) — plan accordingly or you'll be sitting in your car staring at a locked gate.
In late spring, Wapama Falls sends so much water across the trail that the footbridges at the base become impassable and dangerously slick. Check conditions with the Hetch Hetchy ranger station before committing to the drive out.
Bring a wide-angle lens and shoot from the footbridges at the base of Wapama — the falls tower directly above you, and midday light actually works here since the canyon funnels sun onto the granite wall behind the cascade.
