What to Expect
This is Yosemite's mellow side — a wide, unpaved fire road that loops through one of the park's quietest corners, far from the Valley crowds. You'll start near the historic Wawona Hotel and circle a broad, grassy meadow where deer graze in the early morning light. The trail is flat and gentle, shaded by ponderosa pines and incense cedars with occasional openings that frame views across the meadow. In late May through June, the meadow erupts with lupine, paintbrush, and mule's ears — some of the best wildflower displays in the park without any of the competition. The unpaved surface is a bit rutted in spots but never technical. This is the rare Yosemite trail where you can bring your dog on a leash or ride a bike, making it perfect for families, pet owners, and anyone who wants a peaceful walk without the spectacle-chasing crowds.

Pro Tips
Trail Tip
Start from the trailhead across the road from the Wawona Hotel rather than the golf course side — the first mile through the forest is more pleasant and you hit the best meadow views with morning light on your face.
Trail Tip
Peak wildflower season is typically late May through mid-June, but the meadow stays green and scenic into July. Check Yosemite wildflower reports before driving down — the Wawona area blooms a couple weeks earlier than Tuolumne Meadows.
Trail Tip
Walk the loop counter-clockwise for the best photography angle: you'll hit the wide-open meadow stretch on the south side with soft afternoon light and the tree-lined backdrop of the Sierra behind the flowers.
