What to Expect

Starting near the historic Wawona Hotel, this gentle loop follows an old fire road around the perimeter of one of Yosemite's most peaceful meadows. The path is wide, smooth, and flat enough that you'll be paying more attention to the scenery than your footing. Ponderosa pines frame the meadow's edges, and in late spring the open grassland erupts with wildflowers while deer graze without much concern for passersby. There's no dramatic summit or waterfall payoff — the reward is the meadow itself, unhurried and wide open against a backdrop of forested ridges. Unlike the Valley's circus atmosphere, Wawona moves at a slower pace. This loop is made for families with young kids, dog owners who want to actually bring their dog into Yosemite, and anyone who needs a genuine decompression walk rather than a workout.

Safety Advisory

Black bears are active in the Wawona area, particularly in late summer when natural food sources run low. Make noise on the forested sections and store food in your car, not in a pack left at the trailhead.

Trail Tips
  1. 1

Come at first light — the meadow holds morning mist well into June, and deer are reliably grazing near the tree line before 8am. The hotel parking area is nearly empty at that hour.

  2. 2

This is one of only two places in Yosemite where leashed dogs are allowed on trail. If you're bringing a dog, stay on the fire road and avoid cutting through the meadow itself, which has soft, easily damaged ground.

  3. 3

The best photography angle is from the western edge of the loop looking back east across the open meadow toward the tree line — the light hits that composition cleanly in the first two hours after sunrise.
