What to Expect

This trail doesn't ease you into anything. From the first switchback near Camp 4, you're climbing — and you won't really stop for nearly four miles. The lower section grinds through dozens of tight, rocky switchbacks with views that keep improving just enough to keep you moving. Around the halfway mark, you'll hit Columbia Rock, a flat overlook where most casual hikers turn around (no shame in that — the view is legitimately spectacular). Push on and the trail gets rougher, more exposed, and significantly steeper as you grind toward the top of the tallest waterfall in North America. The final push is a lung-scorcher, but when you step out onto the overlook and peer straight down the 2,425-foot drop, every switchback earns its keep. This trail rewards stubborn hikers who like earning their views the hard way.

Safety Advisory

The upper trail is narrow, exposed, and runs along steep drop-offs with minimal barriers. Loose gravel on rock slabs near the summit has caused fatal falls — stay on the trail and keep well back from unprotected edges.

In late spring when snowmelt is heavy, mist from the falls can coat sections of the trail in ice, making footing treacherous even on warm days. Microspikes are worth the pack weight through June.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start before 7 AM to claim parking near Camp 4 and beat the crowds on the lower switchbacks — by mid-morning, the trail below Columbia Rock feels like a highway.

Trail Tip

Carry at least three liters of water per person. There's no reliable water source on the trail, and the exposed upper section in summer sun will drain you faster than you expect.

Trail Tip

At the top, walk past the main overlook to the guardrail at the very edge of the falls — the view straight down the cascade is the real payoff and most people miss it because they stop at the first viewpoint.
