South Campground
The Quick Take
South Campground is Zion's most walkable basecamp -- half a mile from the South Entrance and a short stroll to the visitor center, shuttle stops, and the gateway town of Springdale. With well over a hundred sites spread along the Virgin River, it delivers convenience that Watchman Campground across the road can only partly match, though you trade the electrical hookups and flush toilets Watchman offers. The sites here are relatively close together and the atmosphere leans more toward organized efficiency than wilderness solitude, but that proximity to the canyon shuttle makes it a launchpad for Angels Landing and The Narrows without fighting for parking. Note that the campground is currently closed for rehabilitation, so check NPS updates before planning. Best suited for first-time Zion visitors who want to maximize trail time and minimize logistics.

Pro Tips
Reservations open on a rolling two-week window, so set a calendar reminder for exactly 14 days before your target arrival date and book the moment the window opens -- popular fall weekends sell out within minutes.
Springdale is a half-mile walk from camp, which means you can grab a real dinner at Oscar's Cafe or resupply at Sol Foods without moving your car. The Pa'rus Trail also starts nearby and is one of the only paved, bike-friendly paths in the canyon.
There are no showers on site, so either pack biodegradable wipes for quick cleanups or walk into Springdale where a couple of outfitters offer pay showers. Also bring your own firewood -- it is not sold in the campground, and collecting wood in the park is prohibited.
