Cable Mountain Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The canyon rim at Cable Mountain is unfenced with a sheer drop of nearly two thousand feet — the edge can be deceptive where slickrock slopes gradually toward the void. Stay well back and watch your footing, especially if it's windy.
The access road to the East Mesa Trailhead can become impassable in wet weather and is typically closed or snowbound from late fall through early spring — check conditions with the visitor center before driving out.

Pro Tips
Access this trail from the east side via Stave Spring or the East Mesa Trailhead — both require a high-clearance vehicle on a dirt road, which is exactly why you'll have the mesa mostly to yourself while thousands queue up for Angels Landing below.
Carry at least two liters per person even though the trail is flat — there's zero shade for long stretches on the mesa top, and the dry air at this elevation pulls moisture out of you faster than you'd expect.
Time your arrival at the canyon rim for late afternoon when the western sun lights up the Great White Throne and the canyon walls glow orange — this is one of the few rim viewpoints in Zion where you're facing the right direction for golden hour.
