What to Expect

The Chinle Trail is Zion's best-kept secret for hikers who want to escape the shuttle crowds entirely. Starting from the Chinle trailhead off Anasazi Plateau Road, you'll traverse open desert terrain through sage and blackbrush, with the ground gradually transitioning between sandy washes and slickrock. The trail is exposed nearly the entire way, rolling gently through the low desert south of the main canyon with only about 600 feet of elevation change across its full one-way distance. The real draw here is the unobstructed panorama of the West Temple and Mount Kinesava — two of Zion's most iconic formations, seen from an angle most visitors never experience. In spring, the desert floor erupts with wildflowers that contrast brilliantly against the red rock. This trail rewards patient walkers who value solitude and wide-open desert scenery over dramatic canyon walls.

Safety Advisory

There is virtually no shade on this trail — full desert sun exposure for the entire route means heat exhaustion is a real concern from May through September. Carry at least three liters of water even for a partial out-and-back.

Flash flood risk exists where the trail crosses and follows Coalpits Wash — avoid this route entirely if thunderstorms are in the forecast, as water can funnel through these drainages with little warning.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Park at the Chinle trailhead accessed via the Anasazi Plateau Road turnoff south of the park — this is outside the main entrance, so no shuttle or entrance fee is required for this section.

Trail Tip

Treat this as a point-to-point or out-and-back rather than committing to the full 11.7 miles — the best views of West Temple and Kinesava come within the first three to four miles, making a shorter round trip perfectly satisfying.

Trail Tip

Hit this trail in late March through mid-April for peak wildflower season — the desert marigolds and globe mallow along the wash create some of the best wildflower photography in the park, especially in the soft light of late afternoon with the West Temple as a backdrop.
