Chinle Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
There is virtually no shade on this trail — full desert sun exposure for the entire route means heat exhaustion is a real concern from May through September. Carry at least three liters of water even for a partial out-and-back.
Flash flood risk exists where the trail crosses and follows Coalpits Wash — avoid this route entirely if thunderstorms are in the forecast, as water can funnel through these drainages with little warning.

Pro Tips
Park at the Chinle trailhead accessed via the Anasazi Plateau Road turnoff south of the park — this is outside the main entrance, so no shuttle or entrance fee is required for this section.
Treat this as a point-to-point or out-and-back rather than committing to the full 11.7 miles — the best views of West Temple and Kinesava come within the first three to four miles, making a shorter round trip perfectly satisfying.
Hit this trail in late March through mid-April for peak wildflower season — the desert marigolds and globe mallow along the wash create some of the best wildflower photography in the park, especially in the soft light of late afternoon with the West Temple as a backdrop.
