What to Expect

This is Zion's best-kept secret for people who want big views without big effort. Starting from the Wildcat Canyon trailhead on the Kolob Terrace Road, you'll wander through stands of quaking aspen and ponderosa pine — a world apart from the sandstone ovens down in the main canyon. The trail is mostly flat, with barely enough elevation change to qualify as a warm-up, meandering across a high plateau before delivering you to a jaw-dropping overlook. From the viewpoint, the twin Northgate Peaks frame a window into the heart of the Zion Wilderness, with the Guardian Angels and a sea of slickrock towers stretching to the horizon. The trail surface is packed dirt with occasional roots, well-shaded for most of the route. This one is perfect for hikers who want a contemplative walk that ends with a view usually reserved for people willing to suffer for it.

Safety Advisory

The Kolob Terrace Road is unplowed in winter and can be impassable with ice or snow well into spring — check road conditions with the visitor center before driving up.

Afternoon thunderstorms roll in fast during July and August on this exposed plateau — if you hear thunder, head back immediately since lightning strikes are a real risk at this elevation.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

The trailhead sits at around 7,500 feet on Kolob Terrace Road — start early not for the heat but for the light, as the morning sun paints the Northgate Peaks in deep orange and gold before flattening out by midday.

Trail Tip

Kolob Terrace Road is paved but narrow and winding with no gas stations — fill your tank in Virgin or La Verkin before heading up, and note the road closes after heavy snow, typically November through April.

Trail Tip

Walk past the official viewpoint another hundred yards to the left for an unobstructed angle on both peaks without the railing in your shot — this is where the landscape photographers set up.
