What to Expect

This is Zion's friendliest trail, and that is not an insult. The Pa'rus follows the Virgin River on smooth pavement from the visitor center to Canyon Junction, with the Watchman towering above you like a sandstone skyscraper the entire way. The trail crosses the river several times on footbridges, each one offering a slightly different angle on the canyon walls that makes you stop and stare. Cottonwood trees line the banks and provide decent shade, while interpretive signs along the way explain the geology without being preachy about it. The real draw is the accessibility — this is the only trail in Zion where your dog can join you, and it handles wheelchairs, strollers, and bikes without complaint. Photographers, families with little kids, and anyone who wants Zion's iconic views without Zion's iconic suffering will love this one.

Safety Advisory

Summer temperatures in Zion regularly push past 100 degrees, and this trail has long exposed stretches between the cottonwood groves — walk it early morning or evening and bring more water than you think you need.

Flash flood warnings apply near the Virgin River even on this mellow trail. If the sky upstream looks threatening or you hear a roar, move to higher ground immediately.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Walk it at sunset heading toward Canyon Junction — the Watchman catches golden light that will make you forget every crowded shuttle ride you endured that day.

Trail Tip

This trail doubles as a practical connector: bike or walk it from Watchman Campground to catch the shuttle at Canyon Junction instead of fighting the visitor center parking lot.

Trail Tip

Come back after dark for some of the best stargazing in the park — the paved surface means you can walk safely with a headlamp, and the open river corridor gives you a wide swath of sky above the canyon walls.
