Watchman Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The trail has several moderate drop-offs with no guardrails. Keep a close eye on kids, especially on the upper switchbacks where the trail narrows and the sandy surface can be slippery underfoot.
Summer afternoon temperatures regularly push past 100 degrees and there is virtually no shade on the climb. If you insist on a midday summer hike, bring more water than you think you need and turn around if you start feeling dizzy.

Pro Tips
Hit this trail in the late afternoon when the setting sun lights up the Watchman's face in deep orange and red — morning light falls flat on the rock and the photos are forgettable by comparison.
Since the trailhead is right at the Visitor Center, you can do this hike before or after the shuttle crowds descend. It's one of the few quality trails in Zion you can reach without riding the shuttle at all — just park in the Visitor Center lot.
The overlook at the top is actually a loop with several viewpoint spurs. Most people stop at the first clearing, but walk the full loop counterclockwise and you'll find a quieter perch on the south side with an unobstructed shot of the Watchman framed against the canyon walls.
