What to Expect

Starting from the Don Cecil Trailhead near Cedar Grove Visitor Center, you'll climb gently through a forested ravine that feels worlds away from the more trafficked areas of Sequoia and Kings Canyon. The trail threads through mixed conifers with dappled light filtering through the canopy, and every so often the trees open up to reveal jaw-dropping views of the Monarch Divide — a wall of granite peaks that looks like someone took a serrated knife to the Sierra skyline. About a mile in, the forest closes around you into a cool, shady glen where Sheep Creek tumbles over a series of small rock ledges in a modest but genuinely pretty cascade. It's not Yosemite Falls, and that's exactly the point. The whole out-and-back wraps up in under two hours, making it a perfect morning stretch. This one is built for hikers who value quiet over spectacle and appreciate a canyon so deep most people don't even know it exists.

Safety Advisory

The rocks around Sheep Creek Cascade are slick with spray and algae, especially early in the season — watch your footing if you scramble off-trail to get closer to the water.

Cedar Grove sits at around 4,600 feet and the canyon walls trap heat in summer; afternoon temperatures can climb well above 90 degrees, so carry more water than you think you need for even a short hike.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Cedar Grove is a solid hour's drive from Grant Grove on a winding road with no services — top off your gas tank before dropping into the canyon, because there's nothing down there but scenery.

Trail Tip

Hit the trail before 10 AM and you'll likely have the cascade to yourself; Cedar Grove sees a fraction of the traffic that Giant Forest gets, but the few visitors who do come tend to cluster midday.

Trail Tip

The best photo angle of the Monarch Divide is about half a mile in where the ravine opens to the north — look for a flat granite slab on the left side of the trail that makes a natural viewing platform.
