What to Expect

This is the pilgrimage route to the largest living thing on Earth, and it earns that finale. Starting from Lodgepole Campground, the trail winds downhill through a cathedral of giant sequoias — trees so massive your brain genuinely struggles to process them. The path is well-maintained and mostly shaded, threading through fern-carpeted forest floor with that distinctive Sierra smell of warm bark and vanilla (yes, giant sequoias actually smell like butterscotch). The grade is gentle enough that the trail is wheelchair accessible, though the return shuttle makes this a one-way downhill affair if you plan it right. When you finally stand at the base of General Sherman — 275 feet of living wood, wider than a two-lane road — even the most jaded hiker goes quiet for a moment. Perfect for families, first-timers, and anyone who wants to feel genuinely small.

Safety Advisory

At around 6,700 feet elevation, visitors coming from sea level may feel winded on even gentle inclines — take it slow and hydrate well, especially if you decide to walk back uphill instead of taking the shuttle.

The trail crosses some exposed tree roots and can be slippery when wet or icy in shoulder season — watch your footing even though the path is generally well-groomed.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hike the trail downhill from Lodgepole to Sherman Tree, then catch the Green Route 1 shuttle back to your car — you get all the scenery with none of the uphill return slog.

Trail Tip

Start before 9 AM to beat the tour bus crowds at General Sherman. By mid-morning the viewing area feels like a theme park; at 7:30 AM you might have the biggest tree on the planet nearly to yourself.

Trail Tip

Stop at the cluster of sequoias about halfway down the trail where the canopy opens slightly — the morning light filtering through these giants is the best photo opportunity on the route, far better than the crowded Sherman Tree platform.
