What to Expect

This is one of Sequoia's quieter grunt-fests — a ten-mile roundtrip that earns every inch of its strenuous rating through relentless uphill switchbacks climbing from the South Fork of the Kaweah River into a grove of ancient giant sequoias that most visitors never bother to see. The lower stretch winds through sun-baked chaparral and oak woodland before the trail pushes into mixed conifer forest where the temperature drops and the shade thickens. The payoff is Garfield Grove itself: massive sequoias standing in cathedral-like silence, without the crowds that swarm General Sherman or the Congress Trail. Expect a dry, exposed climb on the way up and tired knees on the way down. This trail rewards hikers who want to earn their sequoias the old-fashioned way — with sweat and solitude.

Safety Advisory

The lower portion of the trail is fully exposed with no shade — heat exhaustion is a real risk on summer afternoons when temperatures in the foothills can push well past 90 degrees.

Rattlesnakes are common in the chaparral and oak belt during warm months; watch where you step and give them a wide berth on the switchbacks.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start at first light to tackle the exposed lower switchbacks before the sun turns them into a convection oven — by mid-morning in summer, that south-facing slope is punishing.

Trail Tip

Carry at least three liters of water per person; there are no reliable water sources along the trail, and the climb is relentless enough to drain you faster than you expect.

Trail Tip

The biggest sequoias in the grove sit off the main trail to the northwest — spend an extra twenty minutes exploring once you reach the grove floor, where you'll find trees rivaling anything along the more famous routes.
