What to Expect

Starting from the South Fork trailhead near the remote southern edge of the park, Ladybug Trail drops you into a world most Sequoia visitors never see. The path follows the South Fork of the Kaweah River through oak woodland and chaparral before climbing into mixed conifer forest — expect sun-baked switchbacks early on that give way to welcome shade as you gain elevation. The trail is well-worn but rocky in sections, with a few spots where you'll scramble over exposed roots. Your reward at the three-mile mark is Ladybug Camp and the surrounding grove of sequoias growing at an unusually low elevation — these aren't the towering giants of the General Sherman neighborhood, but they're impressive in their own right and you'll likely have them entirely to yourself. This one's perfect for hikers who want a legitimate workout without the tourist crowds that swarm the more famous groves.

Safety Advisory

Poison oak is prolific along the lower stretches of this trail, especially where the path narrows through chaparral — learn to identify it and stick to the center of the trail.

Rattlesnakes are active in the warmer months at this elevation — watch your step on rocky sections and never reach blindly onto ledges or under logs.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start early in warmer months — the lower elevation and south-facing exposure mean the first mile can feel like a furnace by mid-morning, and the Kaweah River sections are far more enjoyable in cool air.

Trail Tip

The South Fork area is accessed via a long, winding road through Three Rivers that adds significant drive time — budget at least 45 minutes from the Ash Mountain entrance and top off your gas before leaving town.

Trail Tip

The sequoias near Ladybug Camp photograph best in late afternoon when filtered light cuts through the canopy at low angles — if you time your arrival for golden hour, you'll get dramatic shots without the flat midday wash.
