What to Expect

Long Meadow Loop is one of those quiet Giant Forest gems that most visitors blow right past on their way to General Sherman. The trail winds through a sprawling subalpine meadow ringed by towering sequoias, offering a completely different perspective on these ancient trees — instead of craning your neck straight up, you're seeing them from across an open expanse, which actually gives you a better sense of their absurd scale. The path is mostly flat and well-maintained, winding through mixed conifer forest before opening up into the meadow proper, where wildflowers carpet the ground in early summer. Expect soft, needle-cushioned trail through the forested sections and occasionally muddy stretches near the meadow's edge during snowmelt. This is the kind of trail that rewards slow walkers and people who actually stop to look around — birders, photographers, and families who want sequoia magic without the crowds or the cardio.

Safety Advisory

Black bears are active throughout the Giant Forest area, especially near meadows at dawn and dusk. Store all food in bear boxes and never leave snacks in your daypack unattended.

The trail can be snow-covered and icy well into May or even June in heavy snow years — check current conditions with the Lodgepole Visitor Center before heading out.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start from the Wolverton Road trailhead rather than the General Sherman parking area — you'll dodge the tour bus crowds and have the meadow mostly to yourself for the first stretch.

Trail Tip

Hit this trail in the early morning or late afternoon when the low-angle light turns the meadow golden and the sequoia bark glows that signature cinnamon-red. Midday sun washes everything out.

Trail Tip

Combine this with the nearby Hazelwood Nature Trail or Circle Meadow Loop for a longer outing without any real additional difficulty — you can easily string together a half-day of flat sequoia wandering.
