What to Expect

Marble Falls is Sequoia's secret warm-up hike — the one locals do when the high country is still buried under snow. Starting from the Potwisha Campground area, you'll climb steadily through sun-baked chaparral, switchbacking up slopes covered in manzanita, buckbrush, and seasonal wildflowers. The trail is narrow, rocky in places, and largely exposed, so it earns every bit of that 'moderate' rating through sheer sun exposure rather than technical terrain. The Marble Fork of the Kaweah River keeps you company below, its sound growing louder as you approach the payoff: a stunning cascade tumbling over polished marble rock into deep pools. It's not a single dramatic plunge but a long, tiered series of falls that reward you for the climb. This trail is perfect for hikers who want a solid workout with a jaw-dropping river destination — and who don't mind earning it under open sky.

Safety Advisory

Rattlesnakes are common along this trail, especially in warmer months. The rocky, brushy terrain is ideal habitat, so watch where you step and never reach blindly over rocks or ledges.

The marble rock at the falls is dangerously slick when wet. Multiple rescues have been needed here — stay well back from the edge of the cascades, and don't attempt to climb the falls or wade into fast-moving water above the drops.

Heat exposure is a serious concern from late spring through early fall. Carry at least two liters of water per person — there is no reliable shade or water refill point along the trail.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hit the trail by 7 AM in spring and summer — there's almost no shade for the entire route, and afternoon temperatures in the Kaweah River canyon regularly push past 95 degrees from May through September.

Trail Tip

This is one of Sequoia's best early-season trails. When the Giant Forest trails are snowbound through April, Marble Falls is often clear and the waterfall is at peak flow from snowmelt — time your visit for late March through mid-May for the best cascade.

Trail Tip

The falls are actually a long series of cascades spread across marble bedrock. Don't stop at the first view — carefully pick your way along the rocks to find quieter pools upstream where you can soak your feet and have lunch with a private waterfall soundtrack.
