What to Expect

The Middle Fork Trail drops you into the less-traveled side of Sequoia, trading the usual giant tree crowds for sun-baked chaparral and sweeping canyon views. From the trailhead near the Middle Fork of the Kaweah River, you'll wind through manzanita and scrub oak along exposed switchbacks that offer surprisingly dramatic vistas of Moro Rock's granite dome and the jagged Castle Rocks formation. The trail gradually descends toward Panther Creek, where a modest but photogenic waterfall rewards your effort — and reminds you that the return trip is all uphill. At six miles round trip with moderate terrain, this isn't a leg-destroyer, but the sun exposure and return climb earn it honest moderate status. This one's for hikers who want Sequoia views without the sequoia-sized crowds.

Safety Advisory

Virtually no shade on this trail — heat exhaustion is a genuine risk from June through September. Carry at least two liters per person and wear sun protection that actually works.

The trail follows exposed slopes above the canyon with some narrow sections and loose footing on decomposed granite. Watch your step on the descent, especially if the surface is dry and sandy.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start early morning — the trail faces south and west with almost no tree cover, so by midday you're hiking in a solar oven. A 7 AM start gets you to the falls and back before the worst heat.

Trail Tip

The trailhead sits off the Generals Highway near Hospital Rock — parking is limited to a small pullout, so arriving before 9 AM on summer weekends is essential to snag a spot.

Trail Tip

Panther Creek Falls photographs best in spring when snowmelt gives it real volume. Position yourself on the rocks just downstream for a composition that frames the falls against the canyon wall.
