What to Expect

This is one of those sneaky-good Sequoia trails that most visitors blow past on their way to the big trees. You'll cross the Middle Fork Bridge and immediately drop into Paradise Canyon, where the vibe shifts from dry foothill scrub to a surprisingly lush corridor of oak woodland hugging the creek. The trail is short — barely a half-mile each way — but it packs in small waterfalls, wading pools that catch the light, and a canopy that actually provides shade in a part of the park that can feel like a convection oven. The path is gentle and wheelchair-accessible, making it one of the rare Sequoia trails where everyone in your group can participate. When the trail officially ends at the one-mile mark, so does the maintained path — bushwhacking beyond requires real route-finding skills. This is a perfect trail for families with young kids, anyone looking to cool off in the foothills, or hikers who want a quick nature fix without committing to a full day.

Safety Advisory

Summer air quality in the foothills can deteriorate rapidly during wildfire season — check the Sequoia AQI before heading out, and bail if it's above 150. Smoke tends to pool in the canyon.

The creek rocks are deceptively slippery, especially near the waterfalls. A fall onto wet granite with a thin layer of algae is how most minor injuries happen on this trail.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hit this trail before 9 AM in summer — the foothills zone regularly climbs past 100 degrees by midday, and the canyon traps heat like a slow cooker. Morning light also hits the waterfalls at a better angle.

Trail Tip

The pools along Paradise Creek are some of the best casual wading spots in the foothills district. Bring water shoes or sandals with grip if you want to explore the creek bed without slipping on algae-covered rocks.

Trail Tip

Most visitors skip the foothills entirely for Giant Forest, which means you'll likely have this trail nearly to yourself even on busy summer weekends. Pair it with a stop at Hospital Rock picnic area just up the road for pictographs and grinding stones.
