What to Expect

The Soldiers Trail is one of Sequoia's quieter connectors through the Giant Forest and Lodgepole area, threading between towering sequoia groves on a path that most visitors walk right past on their way to the bigger-name attractions. The trail follows a historic route once used by U.S. Army cavalry patrols who protected the park before the National Park Service existed. You'll move through mixed conifer forest with scattered giant sequoias, crossing patches of dappled light and dense shade where the forest floor stays cool even in midsummer. The terrain is generally moderate with a soft, needle-covered tread and occasional rocky sections where roots cross the path. This is a trail for hikers who appreciate the journey over the destination — the kind of walk where you stop to crane your neck at a massive trunk and realize you haven't seen another person in twenty minutes.

Safety Advisory

Bear activity is high in the Giant Forest and Lodgepole corridor — store all food and scented items in bear boxes at trailheads, and make noise on the trail, especially around blind corners in dense forest.

Snow can linger on shaded sections of this trail well into June. Footing gets slippery on packed snow over roots, so traction devices are worth tossing in your pack during spring visits.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Use this trail as a connector between Giant Forest Museum and Lodgepole to avoid the congested shuttle and parking situation during peak summer weekends — it's more pleasant on foot than waiting in a car line.

Trail Tip

The Giant Forest area sits around 6,400 feet, so if you're arriving from low elevation, take it easy on your first day. This trail makes a perfect acclimation walk before tackling bigger objectives like Alta Peak.

Trail Tip

Early morning light filtering through the sequoia canopy creates dramatic shafts of light, especially where the trail passes through denser groves. Bring a wide-angle lens and shoot looking straight up the trunks.
