What to Expect

This is the trail you recommend to friends who say they don't hike. Starting from the Generals Highway near Kings Canyon Overlook, you'll climb a gentle but steady path through a mixed conifer forest where Jeffrey pines and red firs filter the light. The trail threads between house-sized granite boulders that kids will want to scramble on, and in July the wildflowers fill every gap between the rocks. The elevation gain is modest — about the equivalent of climbing a 30-story building — but you're already starting above 7,000 feet, so take it easier than you think you need to. The summit delivers one of the best effort-to-reward ratios in either park: a panoramic sweep from Redwood Canyon's ancient groves far below to the jagged Sierra Crest punching the sky to the east. Perfect for families, photographers, or anyone with an hour to spare and a desire to feel like they earned a view.

Safety Advisory

The summit area is an open granite dome with unprotected drop-offs on the north side — keep close watch on children and stay well back from edges, especially when the rock is wet.

At over 7,000 feet, afternoon thunderstorms roll in fast during July and August — if you see clouds building to the south, skip the exposed summit and head back down.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Park at the signed pullout on the Generals Highway between the Kings Canyon Overlook and Montecito Sequoia Lodge — it fills up by mid-morning on summer weekends, so aim for before 9 AM or after 4 PM.

Trail Tip

The summit rocks are exposed granite slabs with no railing — wear shoes with decent grip rather than flip-flops, even though the trail is short enough to tempt you.

Trail Tip

Bring a wide-angle lens or panoramic phone mode for the summit — the view spans nearly 270 degrees, and a standard focal length can't capture the Redwood Canyon-to-Sierra Crest sweep in one frame.
