What to Expect

This is the gentlest introduction to White Sands you'll find — a raised boardwalk that floats above the delicate interdune flats, keeping your shoes gypsum-free while delivering views that punch well above its weight. The path is flat, paved, and fully accessible, threading between the bright white dune crests where desert grasses and yucca cling stubbornly to life in the spaces between sand mountains. In under fifteen minutes you'll reach a viewpoint overlooking the heart of the dune field with the Sacramento Mountains stacking up behind it — the contrast between blinding white gypsum and purple-blue peaks is almost absurd. This is a trail for everyone: families with strollers, wheelchair users, grandparents, and photographers who want that iconic White Sands shot without committing to a longer slog through soft sand.

Safety Advisory

The white gypsum sand reflects UV aggressively — you can sunburn in twenty minutes even on overcast days. Sunscreen and sunglasses are non-negotiable, even for a short walk.

Summer surface temperatures on and around the boardwalk can exceed 150 degrees Fahrenheit — if you bring a dog, touch the boardwalk surface with your hand first. If you can't hold it for five seconds, paws can't handle it either.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Time your visit for late afternoon when the low-angle light turns the dunes gold and pink — the boardwalk viewpoint faces the perfect direction for sunset photography against the Sacramentos.

Trail Tip

Check the park's safety corridor status before driving out — this trail closes periodically for missile testing on the adjacent White Sands Missile Range, and there's no workaround when it does.

Trail Tip

Pair this with the Dune Life Nature Trail nearby for a quick one-two punch that covers both the interdune ecosystem and the dunes themselves in under an hour total.
