Hiking the Playa Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The white gypsum surface reflects intense UV radiation from below as well as above — you can sunburn surprisingly fast even on a short walk, so apply sunscreen to your chin and under your nose.
The playa mud after rain can be deceptively slippery and sticky — keep kids (and yourself) on solid ground at the edges rather than wading into the center.

Pro Tips
Visit during or just after monsoon season (July through September) to catch the playa holding water — the reflections at sunset are spectacular and most visitors have no idea this even happens here.
Pair this with the Interdune Boardwalk nearby for a solid one-hour combo that covers two completely different White Sands ecosystems without breaking a sweat.
Bring a magnifying glass or macro lens — the selenite crystals that form on the playa surface as water evaporates are one of the most photographable details in the entire park, and most people walk right past them.
