What to Expect

Sunspot Trail is White Sands at its most accessible — a quick out-and-back across brilliant gypsum dunes that feels like walking on another planet without the commitment of a longer route. The trail climbs a gentle rise (barely enough elevation to notice) through blinding white sand, with the Tularosa Basin stretching out in every direction from the top. There's no shade, no trees, no landmarks — just pure, rolling dune fields that shift underfoot like packed snow. The trail is marked with posts, which matters more than you'd think when every direction looks identical. At the high point, you get sweeping views of the San Andres Mountains to the west and the Sacramento range to the east, framed by an ocean of white. This is the trail for families, first-timers, and anyone who wants the iconic White Sands photo without breaking a sweat.

Safety Advisory

The white sand reflects UV aggressively — you can sunburn in under 20 minutes even on overcast days. Apply sunscreen to the underside of your chin and nose, not just the tops.

Missile range closures shut down the park entrance road without much notice, sometimes for hours. Check the White Sands website or call ahead the morning of your visit to confirm the park is open.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Time your visit for the last two hours before sunset — the dunes shift from stark white to gold, pink, and lavender, and the temperature drops from punishing to pleasant.

Trail Tip

Wear closed-toe shoes with socks, not sandals. Gypsum sand is cooler than regular sand but still gets into everything, and the crystal edges can irritate bare skin on a longer walk.

Trail Tip

Bring a sled or saucer disc from the park gift shop — the dunes near Sunspot Trail are some of the best for sledding, and kids (and adults) will want to spend more time sliding than hiking.
