What to Expect

Starting just off the Glenn Highway near the Wrangell-St. Elias Visitor Center, the Aspen Interpretive Trail is a quick leg-stretcher that punches well above its weight in scenery. The path winds through a stand of quaking aspens — a rarity in this part of Alaska — with interpretive signs explaining the boreal ecology around you. The trail is short and relatively flat, making it more of a nature walk than a proper hike, but the backdrop is pure Wrangell-St. Elias grandeur: massive peaks and river valleys stretching to the horizon. Note that the NPS doesn't maintain this trail, so expect uneven footing, root tangles, and sections that can get muddy after rain. This one is perfect for families breaking up a long drive on the Glenn Highway, or anyone who wants a taste of the largest national park in America without committing to a backcountry expedition.

Safety Advisory

Bear activity is common throughout the Wrangell-St. Elias area, even on short trails near the highway. Carry bear spray and make noise, especially in the dense aspen groves where sight lines are limited.

The unmaintained status means downed trees, obscured trail sections, and potentially confusing route-finding. Stay aware of your surroundings and turn back if the path becomes unclear.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Time your stop to coincide with a visit to the nearby Wrangell-St. Elias Visitor Center, which has excellent exhibits, clean restrooms, and rangers who can point you toward longer adventures in the park.

Trail Tip

In September, the aspen grove erupts in gold — one of the few reliable fall color shows in interior Alaska. Combine with the Glenn Highway's own fall scenery for a world-class drive.

Trail Tip

Since this trail isn't NPS-maintained, conditions vary year to year. Check in at the visitor center before heading out, especially early in the season when deadfall and washouts are common.
