Aspen Interpretive Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
Bear activity is common throughout the Wrangell-St. Elias area, even on short trails near the highway. Carry bear spray and make noise, especially in the dense aspen groves where sight lines are limited.
The unmaintained status means downed trees, obscured trail sections, and potentially confusing route-finding. Stay aware of your surroundings and turn back if the path becomes unclear.

Pro Tips
Time your stop to coincide with a visit to the nearby Wrangell-St. Elias Visitor Center, which has excellent exhibits, clean restrooms, and rangers who can point you toward longer adventures in the park.
In September, the aspen grove erupts in gold — one of the few reliable fall color shows in interior Alaska. Combine with the Glenn Highway's own fall scenery for a world-class drive.
Since this trail isn't NPS-maintained, conditions vary year to year. Check in at the visitor center before heading out, especially early in the season when deadfall and washouts are common.
