What to Expect

Starting right outside the Wrangell-St. Elias Visitor Center, this half-mile loop punches well above its weight class. The trail winds through a pocket of boreal forest — think spruce and birch canopy with a soft, needle-cushioned path underfoot — before opening up to overlook views of the Wrangell Mountains that will stop you mid-sentence. For a trail you can knock out in twenty minutes, the payoff is absurd: massive glaciated peaks stretching across the horizon, with interpretive signs along the way that actually teach you something about the largest national park in the country. The path is well-maintained and mostly flat, though a few sections have roots and uneven ground that keep it from being fully accessible. This is the perfect trail for travelers who just pulled off the McCarthy Road and need to stretch their legs, or anyone who wants a taste of the Wrangell-St. Elias backcountry without committing to it.

Safety Advisory

Bear activity is common around the visitor center area, especially in late summer. Make noise on the trail and check in with rangers about recent sightings before heading out.

Mosquitoes can be savage from June through mid-July — bring a head net and repellent or you'll be miserable even on a twenty-minute walk.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Walk the loop counterclockwise to save the mountain overlook for the second half — it hits harder as a reveal than as an opener.

Trail Tip

Pair this with a stop inside the visitor center first, where rangers can point out exactly which peaks and glaciers you're seeing from the overlook. It transforms the view from pretty scenery into something you actually understand.

Trail Tip

The late afternoon light on the Wrangell Mountains is spectacular from this vantage point — if you're arriving in the evening after a long drive, this trail is worth doing before you set up camp.
