What to Expect

This short loop punches above its weight class. You'll start by threading through dense boreal forest — spruce and alder closing in tight enough to brush your sleeves — before the canopy breaks and the Crystalline Hills rear up beside you like a wall of rough-cut stone. The trail traces the base of these steep slopes, giving you that satisfying feeling of walking alongside something massive without having to climb it. At two and a half miles, this is a leg-stretcher rather than a death march, but the terrain keeps things interesting with rooty sections and enough undulation to remind you that you're in the largest national park in the country. Views filter through the trees in unexpected bursts — river valleys, distant peaks, the kind of Alaskan grandeur that makes you stop mid-stride. Perfect for hikers who want a taste of Wrangell-St. Elias without committing to a full backcountry expedition.

Safety Advisory

This is grizzly bear country, full stop. Make noise on the trail, carry bear spray in a hip holster (not buried in your pack), and be especially alert rounding blind corners in the dense forest sections.

Trail markers can be faint and the path braids in a few spots — pay attention at junctions, and consider downloading the route to your phone beforehand since cell service is nonexistent out here.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hike the loop counterclockwise to get the steeper sections out of the way early while your legs are fresh, then cruise the flatter forest stretch back to the trailhead.

Trail Tip

Bring a head net and DEET — the dense forest sections are mosquito territory from June through mid-August, and the little vampires are relentless at the base of those hills where air circulation drops to zero.

Trail Tip

The best views of the Crystalline Hills themselves come about a mile in where the forest thins on the south-facing slope — pause here for photos before the trail dips back into the trees.
