What to Expect

The Fish Train Trail is about as mellow as Alaska hiking gets — a converted railroad bed that trades steep switchbacks for flat, easy walking along the old Yakutat Southern Railroad corridor. The packed gravel surface rolls through coastal Sitka spruce forest with glimpses of the surrounding Yakutat forelands, where glaciers and ocean compete for the horizon. Being a rails-to-trails conversion, the grade never gets steeper than what a loaded freight car could handle, which means you can actually look around instead of staring at your boots. The trail sits just a short walk from the Alaska Marine Highway terminal, making it a perfect leg-stretcher if you're arriving by ferry after hours of sitting on deck. Families with young kids, casual walkers, and anyone who just stepped off a boat will appreciate this one.

Safety Advisory

Yakutat averages over 150 inches of rain per year — waterproof layers are not optional, even on days that start clear. Hypothermia is a real risk if you get soaked and the wind picks up.

This is bear country. Make noise on the trail, carry bear spray, and be especially alert near any stream crossings where salmon may be running.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

If you're arriving on the Alaska Marine Highway ferry, this trail is less than a quarter-mile from the Yakutat terminal — perfect for burning off sea legs before heading into town or waiting for a ride.

Trail Tip

The old railroad bed means the surface is well-compacted and relatively flat, so you can get away with regular shoes rather than full hiking boots — just make sure they handle wet ground, because this is Yakutat and it rains constantly.

Trail Tip

Bring binoculars: the Yakutat forelands are a birding hotspot, and the forest edges along the old rail corridor attract species you won't spot from the road.
