What to Expect

Here's the thing about the Five-Mile Trail — it's not technically in Wrangell-St. Elias at all. This day hike sits near Chitina along the Edgerton Highway, outside park boundaries and without NPS maintenance. That said, you're still deep in Alaska's Copper River country, surrounded by the same wild, sprawling landscape that defines the largest national park in the system. Expect a rugged, unmaintained path where route-finding skills matter more than fitness. The trail passes through boreal forest and open terrain typical of the Chitina area, with views toward the Wrangell Mountains on clear days. Don't come expecting boardwalks or trail markers — this is Alaska at its most unpolished. Hikers who thrive on self-reliance and don't mind a trail that asks you to earn every mile will feel right at home.

Safety Advisory

This is bear country — both black bears and grizzlies are active in the Chitina area. Carry bear spray in an accessible holster, not buried in your pack, and make noise on the trail.

The trail is unmaintained with no NPS oversight, so downed trees, washed-out sections, and unclear routing are the norm. Solo hikers should leave a detailed trip plan with someone in town.

Weather in the Copper River Basin can shift fast — sunny mornings can turn to cold rain within an hour. Pack layers and a waterproof shell even on bluebird days.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Since this trail is unmaintained and outside NPS jurisdiction, check conditions with locals in Chitina before heading out — the general store or nearby lodge operators usually know if the route is passable.

Trail Tip

Bring a GPS device or downloaded offline map, not just your phone. Trail markings are sparse to nonexistent, and cell service near Chitina ranges from spotty to completely absent.

Trail Tip

Time your visit for late June through August when daylight is nearly endless and the ground has dried out enough to make route-finding less of a slog through mud.
