What to Expect

This short out-and-back punches well above its weight class. Starting from McCarthy Road, you'll cross historic suspension bridges that sway just enough to remind you that you're in genuine Alaska backcountry, not a theme park. The trail itself is gentle — barely a hill's worth of elevation gain spread over a mile — winding through boreal forest before delivering you to the toe of Kuskulana Glacier. The ice face is massive, groaning and cracking in real time, with meltwater channels carving blue-white corridors into the glacier's edge. The whole experience feels disproportionately wild for an easy walk. This trail is perfect for families, photographers, and anyone who wants a legitimate glacier encounter without the all-day sufferfest most ice access demands.

Safety Advisory

Do not approach or climb on the glacier terminus — ice calving is unpredictable and house-sized chunks can break off without warning.

The suspension bridges have open grating and modest railings; keep a firm grip on children and secure loose gear against the wind funneling through the gorge.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

The suspension bridges are the real showpiece — pause midway for unobstructed river gorge views that rival anything on longer Wrangell-St. Elias routes.

Trail Tip

McCarthy Road itself is unpaved and rough; high-clearance vehicles handle it best, and you should budget extra driving time beyond what your GPS estimates.

Trail Tip

Bring binoculars to scan the glacier face for calving activity and the surrounding ridgelines for mountain goats — both are common sightings from the trail's end.
